Here are three of our favourite beaches — Tenby, Saundersfoot and Amroth — all within easy reach of the campsite and each offering something a little different for your coastal adventure.
Tenby Beaches – Colourful, Historic and Full of Life
Few seaside towns in Wales are as iconic as Tenby. Surrounded by medieval town walls and famous for its pastel-coloured harbour houses, Tenby has several beautiful beaches to explore.
North Beach offers sweeping views across Carmarthen Bay, with plenty of space for swimming, relaxing or building sandcastles. Nearby Castle Beach sits beneath the dramatic ruins of Tenby Castle, making it one of the most photographed spots on the Welsh coast.
After a day by the sea, wander into town where you’ll find plenty of welcoming pubs, cafés and restaurants. A classic way to end the day? Fish and chips overlooking the harbour from one of Tenby’s many excellent chippies.
Tenby also offers a few unique experiences. Boats regularly run from the harbour to Caldey Island, home to a community of Cistercian monks and peaceful sandy beaches. Alternatively, you can try your hand at mackerel fishing trips from the harbour.
Art lovers may enjoy a visit to the Tenby Museum and Art Gallery, which features works by renowned Welsh artist Augustus John, who was born in the town.
Saundersfoot Beach – Seaside Charm and Coastal Adventures
Just along the coast from Tenby lies the picturesque village of Saundersfoot. Its wide sandy beach and sheltered bay make it a favourite for families and swimmers.
At low tide the beach stretches far out across the bay, creating plenty of space for beach games, paddling and relaxing in the sun. The village itself has a lively yet friendly atmosphere, with lots of cafés, pubs and restaurants overlooking the harbour.
For the more adventurous, Saundersfoot is also a great place to try watersports. Local providers offer canoe, kayak and paddleboard hire, giving you the chance to explore the coastline from the water.
Walkers will love this stretch of the Pembrokeshire Coast Path. A popular route is the spectacular coastal walk from Saundersfoot to Tenby — around four miles of cliffs, coves and sea views. Many walkers reward themselves with fish and chips in Tenby before catching the bus back.
Before leaving Saundersfoot, it’s also worth visiting the small but fascinating Saundersfoot Harbour Heritage Centre, which tells the story of the area’s coal mining and maritime past.
Amroth Beach – A Hidden Gem Just a Walk Away
Our local beach, Amroth, is one of the hidden gems of the Pembrokeshire coast — and it’s just a 25-minute walk or 10-minute drive from Green Sheep Camping.
The route takes you down a quiet farm lane past fields before descending through a wooded valley towards the sea. The walk down is easy, but the climb back is a little steeper — especially if you’ve enjoyed a pint or two at one of the welcoming pubs along the seafront!
At low tide Amroth becomes truly spectacular. The sandy beach stretches for hundreds of metres into shallow water, creating an enormous expanse of sand that always surprises first-time visitors.
Keep an eye out for one of the beach’s most unusual features — the petrified forest, often revealed by shifting tides. Ancient tree stumps, preserved for thousands of years beneath the sand, occasionally appear along the shoreline.
You can also spot coal seams in the cliffs, a reminder of the area’s industrial past. The high-quality anthracite coal from this region was once highly prized and played an important role in the local economy.
From Amroth you can walk west along the coast path or head inland to visit Colby Woodland Garden, a beautiful National Trust woodland garden with accessible paths, wildflowers and a lovely café.
